Charleston sits on the Hiwassee River where Cherokee towns and trading paths once converged. In the 1830s, the U.S. Army established Fort Cass near Charleston as headquarters for the Hiwassee District during the Cherokee Removal, making the area a critical point along the Trail of Tears.
